The History of

Culture in Action

Culture in Action was developed by Greg Ranstrom, an executive coach and professional facilitator.

Over the course of his career, Greg has coached and taught hundreds of leaders at corporations and non-profits, from small startups to mature organizations in the Americas, Europe, and Asia.  He has been involved with some of the preeminent management and leadership development courses and has created custom, top-level leadership development programs and processes for companies like ExxonMobil, HP, Merck and Nestle.  His long-term relationship directing the Fellows program for the American Leadership Forum – Silicon Valley has exposed him to an array of leaders, leadership approaches, and personal styles reflecting the intensity and diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area.

As part of this work, Greg has spent years researching how cultures work and how executives build strong, effective cultures.

For much of his career, Greg spent a lot of time helping leaders in the midst of crisis and organization dysfunction. He was good at the work and got an ego boost every time he rescued a client. But every once and again, he would work with a visionary leader who wanted to pay attention to culture early so that the company would thrive and avoid unnecessary crisis.

Starting in 2007, he began saying “no” to calls for the heroic rescue and began working only with leaders who were prepared to proactively focus on culture as the way to make their company great.

The practices that make up Culture in Action distill the insights Greg gleaned from hundreds of successful business and non-profit leaders in Silicon Valley, across the United States, and around the globe. Initially, Greg personally facilitated each Culture in Action session, refining the model as he went.  He proved its effectiveness with clients – those who completed the initial Culture in Action course and those who continued to use the practices and deepen their skills years after the initial engagement.

In 2019, Greg decided to create a do-it-yourself version of Culture in Action.  His goal is to give every leader who wants it a culture-building blueprint that makes it possible for them to grow personally, with their core team, and across their organization.
